It was the funniest by far, especially as I only ever saw it late at night after returning from the pub.

I don't know about the funniest ever, but it was pretty darn funny.
If you like that show check out Police Squad. It was the televsion show that inspired the movie "The Naked Gun" and I think Sledge Hammer tried to copy that same sense of humor.
Police Squad came out in 1982 and Sledge Hammer started in 1986.
The Police Squad tv show is not yet available on DVD
