A radar detector detects radar waves. A police car may be near you, but unless he's shooting radar, the detector will not sound.
Also, if the one you have sounds for other things, like garage door openers or automatic doors at grocery stores, it's probably a much older dectector. The newer policew technology has them using different bands of radar, vascar, kband, and the like.

Police detectors?? are you talking about radar detectors?? if it is a radar detector, not all police cars operate radar systems, or they operate a system that your detector doesn not pick up. what I mean is that there are different radar bands in use today on police radars and your detector may not work with them. Many radar types are the K band, X band , Ka band, photo, and vascar.

because it scans for radar waves present. the police use a radar gun that is pointed at a vehicle and gives off a "burst" to read the speed. your detector Will pick up this "burst" but it's brief. ditch the detector, ride within 5 miles of the limit and you'll never have to worry about a ticket.

If your talking a radar detector, it is most likely because they are using a new radar unit. If this is so, then your detector is useless.
Thye newest one out a LASAR. Most detectors are useless with them.
