ALWAYS keep your laptop on a SOLID, FLAT surface. A table, a board, a book, etc. NEVER on anything with cloth. Most air intakes are on the bottom, and cloth restricts the airflow.

Many newer laptops throttle down performance when running on batteries, which also reduces heat generation also - try running it on the battery rather than plugged in all the time.

depending on where the fan intake is ( usually the underside) keep that port clear and also the exhust port ( if you dont know where they are jut follow the intake of air with ur hand cool=>intake, hot=>exhust)
also the reason a laptop runs hot is because its doing work, so to keep the heat down, try not doing any programs that reguire the processor doing heavy work ( eg programming, math, ...) things like word, internet are very easy on the prcessor.
Also dont leave the laptop ontop of sheet ( like a bed ) clog the air intake and dust

Don't cover any part of the laptop. It needs all of the circulation that it can get. Have it on a flat surface if you're using it for a while. Use it in AC.

If it's old. Take it in, get it cleaned out, and possibly re-seat the CPU.
If it's new, return it, or like said before. Get a Laptop Cooler like this
