Obviously not...people do it all the time and don't say anything bad about it.

Yes, spelling and grammar are still important. The way one writes and expresses oneself is a very important skill. Communicating correctly and effectively has always mattered and always will. It distinguishes the serious achievers from the wannabes. What people are forgetting is that you cannot speak to everyone in the same way, and if you are putting pen to paper in a serious manner, you cannot afford to do so. First impressions matter. For e.g, at the moment, i know nothing about you except, the question you have asked. The question is important and relevant, however, your spellings and grammar are totally awry.I don't know whether it is deliberate on your part, but I would presume you to be lazy, tardy and frivolous. I can count at least five mistakes of spelling and grammar in the question.

Just been reading some of the answers for this and have concluded that the general intelligence level has dropped beyond belief. The level of spelling today is comparable to that of imbeciles in Victorian days - and these poor souls did not have free education. Spelling is and always will be a bench mark of intelligence, so if you poor deluded souls out there think differently, so be it!

Yes. Only with proper grammar will the sense of what people are writing be deciphered. Actually, I think spelling is less important, but as there *is* standard spelling then people should stop being lazy and learn/use it.
Texting is different - but people should use text language for texting, and use proper grammar and spelling for other forms of communication.

Yes. Spelling and grammar are always important. If someone reads something you wrote, and you wrote it incorrectly, you give that person the impression that you are not intelligent, or worse. Incorrect spelling and grammar portray an image of sloppiness and carelessness (ie., that the writer doesn't care enough to proofread). If I were hiring an individual, and that person could not spell, I would hire another person who could spell.

A friend of mine IM'd me that he wanted to "go serf".
We're in a role playing game where it is possible to play a "serf", and in fact I'd be the very person who could hook you up on that. So that's how I took it. Four lines later it was clear he wanted to go ride the waves.
I don't mind--he's a friend--but that could have embarrassed both of use.

Is there some pride in appearing to be uneducated?
If you cannot spell you can always try the spell check button.
If you cannot form a logical sentence that's a bigger problem.

Yes, I feel it is. Younger generations no longer know how to speak, let alone spell or punctuate correctly. Think about it, how far can one get professionally if they cannot communicate properly.
