Run the machine without clothes. When you do this, add a cup of white vinegar to the wash water. If that doesn't work, run the machine void of clothes, with a cup of bleach added. Use hot water .
If all else fails, allow your machine to sit for a day or 2 with an open box of baking soda inside.

Start your washer (empty) on hot water. When it is about half full add about 2 1/2 cups of white vinegar and a box of baking soda. Let it wash like it usually would and when it is through leave the washer lid open until you do the next load of clothes. I do this about once a month. I have 2 small children and we own chicken houses so my husbands clothes always smell like chicken poo and my washer gets to smelling. It really does work. Good Luck!

Try adding Borax along with the detergent. Then add bleach in the bleach compartment. The Borax will help eliminate smells, the bleach will kill bacteria.
Also, leave the top (front for a front-loading machine) open when not in use so that it may dry and air out between washes

Try running hot water and bleach through your washing machine. I do that once in a while, and have no trouble with aromas.

Try running 1 1/2 cups of vinegar through it on the longest cycle your machine has (w/o clothes of course).

Run a cycle with some vinegar and baking soda. Then do a plain rinse. That should get rid of the smell.

it has soap build up around the inside of the outer tub...besides taking it apart and cleaning it try to put a cup and 1/2 of bleach in and run and load with the water level on high. You can also try white vinegar. Got to use something to break up the soap built up.
