It was originally by Tom Cochrane. Rascal Flitts remade this song for the movie "Cars" this year.
"Life Is a Highway" is a song by Tom Cochrane, from his 1991 album Mad Mad World. The song was Cochrane's most famous song, as it was a number one hit in his native Canada, and was ubiquitous on Canadian radio in 1991. The song also peaked at number six on the Billboard charts in the United States in 1992.
In 2006, American country music band Rascal Flatts remade this song for the Disney/Pixar animated film Cars. The movie was released on June 9, 2006. The song sold a large quanity of digital downloads, leading to a top ten peak on the Billboard Hot 100.

If you Google it, you will find that Tom Cochrane had the first hit with it. He was also in a band called Red Ryder who had a hit with "Lunatic Fringe."
You will also find that Tom Petty did it ("Life is a Highway"). Although I am a fan of Tom Petty, I never heard his version.
Currently there is a version being played by the band Rascal Flats.
I am not sure who wrote the song originally. Most likely it was Tom Cochrane, though it seems strange for Tom Petty to cover that song if he didn't write it.

Aside from Cochrane's original version and Rascal Flatt's current cover version, it ws also covered by the late Chris LeDoux in the early '90s, garnering him a top 10 country hit.
