I noticed my tree leaves were discolored, then a few days ago I went out and checked around the roots and noticed the root system was rotted away from the tree on one side. Can I save it?

Crab apple trees do not keep their bright green spring leaves throughout the warm weather season. They tend to start looking distressed by mid summer, and this is a usual occurance. As far as the root problem is concerned, there could be two problems.

Many people put too much mulch around the base of their trees which promotes rotting. Rodents gnawing on the roots could also be leading to the rotting of the roots.

Best advice is to be patient, watch for serious deterioration, and replace if needed.

Good luck with your problem.
