The supposed gap between vauxhall and VW closed significantly with the MK4 astra, as it did with the focus. The golf is not any better than the either of the above, and considerably pricier. If you got to www.reliabilityindex.co.uk you will see that the Astra's reliability is BETTER than the golf.
What the Golf does havem, is better residuals. So in years to come you'll get more for it, but then you'll pay more in the first place.

The new generation Astra is a very good alternative to the golf, Vauxhall at the moment are doing a three day test drive on any of their cars. Try it out, live with it for 3 days and you will be surprised with the quality and refinement of the car. The only downfall is the badge, because of this depreciation will be more a concern as opposed to the Golf.
If it were my choice i would go for the Golf, but only because you don't see as many of them around, making it a tad more exclusive. But don't let the quality, or driving experience of the Astra put you off, you will be pleasantly surprised once you test drive it
Good Luck.

nothing wrong with the astra as a car, dont fall for the VW hype about build quality and all the rest of it, was true some years ago but many models are just trading off the name.

Well, it's like trying to decide between a rock and a hard place; but if you put a gun to my head, it'd have to be the Golf. Vauxhall's are, as you say, crap, but what of the alternatives? Seat Leon? Ford Focus? Or my personal favourite, Alfa Romeo 147?....

Although the astra is cheaper the cost of ownership will be higher than the vw. They depreciate quicker and are less reliable. And as you noticed, yes they are crap.

Rented the occasional Vauxhall, and wouldn't want to buy one. VW a safer bet.
