Okay, I the lead in the play once upon a mattress and I'm having loads of trouble keeping time and not getting completely off of the music. Any suggestions on how I can keep time better?

Practice, practice, practice. Listen to the music every spare minute you have, and practice tapping your foot along with it. In fact, when you listen to any type of music, tap your foot along. Enlist someone from the band or choir or a piano player to help you out. Musicians are nice people; they don't bite.

Practice. Much of it is a natural ability to feel and move with the music, but dancing and music appreciation lessons in general may help develop a oneness with the beat and rhythm of music.

Figure out what the tempo (beats per minute) of each song is and try to keep some part of your body moving to that beat. If you can, try tapping one of your toes inside your shoes (that way people can't see)

Also study the rythmic structure of the songs you sing so you can know exactly how long to hold each note.

Use a metronome, it'll help you keep in time with the music.
