I had a baby about 6 months ago, and I am nursing her, but not exclusively.. I am also supplementing. My hair just looks terrible lately, and I want to do something with it that will not need a lot of maintenance. Last I heard there was no real evidence that getting a perm would hurt your baby if you were still nursing, but that it was recommended that you don't just to be safe. Has there been any more research on that? Is the general answer still no perm if you are breastfeeding a baby?

Of course I love my baby and of course I know she's more important. If it's okay though, and it makes me feel a little better about myself, then that can help improve my morale which in turn can make me a better mother... I would always put my baby first though!

According to theBREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, published by La Leche League International, no evidence exists that the nursing mother's use of hair-care products, such as hair dyes and permanents, has any effect on her breastfeeding baby. When a mother uses hair-care products, some of the chemicals will be absorbed through her skin. If her scalp is healthy and intact, less will be absorbed than if the skin on her scalp is scratched or abraded.

A lot of people who've answered are correct-it's ok to get a perm, even dye your hair, while you're breastfeeding.

With my first child, I asked my midwife about this just to check out what the rationale was. Having your hair chemically processed during pregnancy isn't about the chemicals getting into your body and effecting the baby. It's about the ventilation in the room. See, if you're in a poorly ventilated room, the chemicals used to process your hair can make you very ill and the illness can effect your growing baby.

So, grab a sitter and go get your hair done!!
And, really, shouldn't EVERYONE do their hair in a well-ventilated area? haha

Have fun with your little girl!

you would be fine to get a perm. you're not supposed to dye or perm while pregnant, along with everything else! :) if you are worried about it though, why don't you pump enough for a couple of days before you get your perm and bottle feed rather than going right home after you get a perm and nursing the baby, you'd probably feel safer.

Yes, you can have a perm (see sources section below). It will not harm your baby. The Web page I am including is from the La Leche League Web site; they are the world's foremost experts on breastfeeding.

Getting a perm or dying your hair while breastfeeding are both fine. Go ahead and make yourself feel better!

Whew! I thought you meant give the baby a perm. There is nothing in perm solution or hair dyes that gets into breastmilk.

Get a perm. It will be fine.

However, do not have the baby in the room with you while it is being done, as the vapors/smells can be irritating/overwhelming to babies.
