I am working two jobs. One is as an intern and the other is at Costco. I get paid at both...about the same. The difference is at Costco I have medical, dental, paid vacations, sick time, 401k, and I have been with the company for 7 years. The internship will give me all that ONLY if I am full-time. The internship is related to my major (civil engineering) however it is not EXACTLY the area I wanted to work in. I am interested in structures and the internship is land development. The internship was only for the summer, but they really like me and want me to stay. What should I do?

I would talk to whomever regarding the internship and express your position as to the exact area you want to work in. If the company can accomodate you and let you stay on, will it give you everything that Costco is currently giving you? How important is all of that right now? If the internship is only for the summer, once you graduate, you will, more than likely, get quite a nice employment package (401K, vacation, sick days, etc.) anyway, wherever you go to work for.

Dont you think this was a no brainer ? On one hand there is a Job that will ensure you a secure future and help you earn money to get your kids in college and the on the other you a have job where the only thng you get is a pay packet... and internships dont last forever..
So my dear Stay a Costco

That's tough. However, I doubt that you want to stay with Costco forever. Take the internship. That's the best chance to work in your field and advance. You can probably go back to Costco if it doesn't work out.

Regardless of your choice. Do not give up the medical insurance.

Seems to me you are ready for a job, but hesitent to stay w/ the internship company. Are you interested in looking for "structures" company?

My opinion would be to invest in the intership company and learn your trade.

Hard to call. Costco is not what you want to do either so I would say the one that relates most to your career goal is the best. It will be better for the resume in the end

well if they want you to stay they better give you an offer that you can't refuse. otherwise i'd take a leap of faith and quit, find another internship in the area i'm really interested in. or better yet, you never know, you may just end up getting a better job in what you want to do anyway!!!

yes i think you should stay with the internship because it is closer to your major. it is time to let go of Costco and move on to new and challenging areas.
