Obviously we know it's usually linked to anxiety or excitement or some sort of emotion, but what is actually the PHYSICAL CAUSE of the sensation?

Actually the sensation of butterflies in the stomach is a nervous stimulation caused by the flight or fight response. While adreneline is certainly part of the story it really begins with the brain sending messages throughout the body in response to a stimulus the person determines to be exciting in some way.

Fear or anxiety causes a release of adrenalin for the fight or flight response. The adrenalin several effects-the lower brain functions take precidence over high brain areas-instinctive responses are generally faster (hence with nerves that awful moment when you even forget your name),muscles will need energy and blood for both an impending scrap or run for your life and the heart and lungs will probably need lots of blood. Finally not vital functions like digestion will be put on hold and the blood supply to the digestive organs severely restricted. The last of these causes the sensation of butterflys.

I have never seen anyone gulp butter flies in the stomach. However the stomach just like the Human heart is very responsive to emotion. Ashocking newscan cause the stomach to revolt and can also cause the heart to stop.
Having hate in the system can eventually erod the stomach.

When I was a kid, I was told it causes an insatiable hunger sensation but if that were true, I'd have read somewhere something about and that never happened. Furthermore, we often eat accidentally some flying insects, ants and spiders. It's probably a myth.
