Get this book: "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking", It is very easy to read and understand. The book has everything you need to know about home networking, in adding a wireless access point, adding game consoles, TiVo and many other important items of information. I was a compete novice when I bought this book last year and now can setup a wired or wireless network and add any type of feature, run my Windows Media Edition 2005 connected to my T.V, DVR, Xbox and Sony's Play Station.
The steps, while not complicated, are simply too long to include it here for you to go and hook this up. I would write it if it were not so long, but it is.
Basically, you need to set up a WAP (Wireless Access Point) to your existing network. There are two ways you can do this. You can either change your entire network to wireless, or you can add the Access Point to your DSL or Cable Modem and then hook up your Nintendo game console. For the second option you will need an WAP and configure it as instructed, and a wireless Adapter for the Nintendo game console which you connect to the Access Point. You can have your comptuer wired to your network, or you can go ahead and convert your wired network to a wireless network. To do so you would need a Router with a WAP included, a Wireless Adapter for each computer. The Router is configured first and hooked up to you Modem. You then set up the routers security features which consists of a hardware firewall (If included in router, which these days nearly all have one) and either WEP or WPA encryption and set the Pre-Shared Key. Then you configure each computers wireless Adapter which depending on the manufacturer can be USB, Firewire, or a PCI Card. You run the setup software first BEFORE plugging in the Adapter. Plug the Adapter in only when instructed during the software setup. This installs the Adapters Drivers which are needed for the system to "talk" or communicate with the Adapter. Then plug in the adapter as instructed, put in the Pre-Shared Key, and you will shortly be connected.
This is a simple outline of the process, and you should get a book to fully understand all that is required. You can go to any book store and find one which suits you best. I found the one I listed above to be the easiest to follow yet the most indeapth coverage.
Good luck in setting up your Nintendo game console. You do not want a "Hotspot" which is an unsecured network connection to the internet which allows anyone to connect. This would leave your computer(s) wide open to invasion and take over. Hotspots are used by internet cafe's, hotels, airports, librarys,, etc, to provide clients with internet access either for free or a hourly or daily fee. These types of businesses typically have a seperate secured network for their private use computers, for security of their sensitive data and computer programs.
