Depends. In terms of true talent and innovation, they are definitely in the top 10 on most critics lists. Anyone SERIOUS about music knows this. By serious, I don't mean some high school girl who listens to Simple Plan or Fall Out Boy. By serious, I mean music critics, producers, etc. Their lyrics are phenomenol, the music innovative, and they are one of the few bands out there that actually make you a more intelligent listener of music. If you ask even a lot of mainstream artists from all music genres, such as Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and Coldplay, they have all put the White Stripes amongsts the best bands of our time, with some (Alicia Keys for example) citing the White Stripes as the band they most want to work with.
On the other hand though, the White Stripes are not a hit making machine, like say, Nirvana, the greatest band of the 90s. Their music is not easily digested by the mainstream public, so a lot of people don't get them. Today's music is more focused on the entertainment factor then the art factor. Little of today's mainstream music has the art element, even in rock, The Stripes are among the few that do.
Because of this, I cannot say they are the "greatest" band. I think the impact factor needs to be considered in that. This shouldn't diminish how great they are, though. Jack White is without a doubt THE most talented all round musician out there today. Anyone disagreeing with this would have a tough time. The man can play virtually every instrument in existence, he is a grammy winning producer, he self-engineers (with some assitance), he doesn't even use computers when recording. Its all reel to reel like back in the day. He puts on an awesome stage show, and even plays MULTIPLE instruments at the same time. My personal favorite is when he plays guitar and piano at the same time. He is a guitar legend, and is the most respected guitar player to come out in the past few years. Finally, he is so diverse, he can, and has, done many genres of music.
In conclusion, while the Stripes may not be the greatest band, Jack White is DEFINITELY the greatest musician out there.

I doubt it - I would bet that this question won't be able to be answered for a few more years, to see which band has made the biggest impact.

I hope not. If they are, there's something seriously wrong with the music in "our generation".
