I don't understand it, why do we not hear of gave footballers in the Premiership?
I know that your sexuality is you choice & we are all more or less equal whatever our sexual preference. So many men kind of flaunt the fact that they are gay & are very camp with it.This I'm not a fan of but each to their own.
I just don't understand it. These days we are more open-minded to Gays & Lesbians. people are pretty much openly Gay in most professions.
Soap stars who are gay (Character & in real life) Straight men play gay men. Tennis players who are lesbian, Cabinet ministers, policemen, firemen, solders, Pop stars.
Statistics show it is estimates 1 in 10 people are gay & there are over 2,000 professional footballers. Why is it such a taboo & all in on it have agreed to keep their mouths shut.
Many football players come out of allegations with minimum scratches weather they had drug fueled orgy's, drink driving, A class drug using, adultery, wife beating Would we not accept Gay footballers?

You look at the history of homosexuality in this day and age it is far more acceptable than it was. Even 5 years ago. Marrage far more people are openly gay, and thinks are been done to accept the thriving gay culture.
There as still people who have issues with gays as well as mixed race couples and blah blah blah
I am not saying that gays are treated the same i mean at school i was tormented because of the colour of my hair kids are cruel. But the children are our future we need to teach them well.
How can a footballer get away with been say a wife beater or a drug user or walk out of court with a rape charge have orgys or be an alcoholic yet still get called a legend yet can not be openly gay.
We have a backward society!

Gay Professional Footballers

I think the problem with gay footballers is the same as it is in every walk of life, they'd be persecuted beyond belief by both the press and the ignorant bigots who think it's their business to criticize other people. Justin Fashanu was the first openly gay footballer and he was absolutely slated throughout his career and ultimately committed suicide. Personally, I don't care if a player playing for Newcastle United or any other club is gay, if they're good footballers then so what? Just like I don't care if anyone I know period is gay. It's their business, their life and the sooner people stopped persecuting people based on sexual orientation, colour of their skin or religion, the better society as a whole will become. Those that do persecute, well all I can say is you live very sad lives and maybe, they themselves are hiding something.........

There is no doubt that there are a lot of gay professional footballers .... BUT, when you play in front of 30-70'000 fans, mostly white van driving, alpha male "geezers" ... it's not a clever idea to come out while still playing, you will get so much stick, right or wrong, from fans and players alike ... it's a working mans game to the core, and working class men don't admit to being gay!

Plus, 1 in 10 might not be the same ratio for sportsmen as for other men, as they probably have more testosterone than average....

As much as people would like to think that gay people are as intergrated into society, you're very much mistaken. It will only ever be accepted when people stop talking and inquiring about sexual preference. come on think about it, who really cares if your brother or sister chose to sleep with a member of the same sex?- but society would want to know about it. why? because we have not moved on as much as we should have done. and also as a way to judge people. going back to your question. football is considered the "beautiful game" where men are strong, built and are STRAIGHT. permiscious players are part of footballers' perogative. A gay footballer would be a great thing, sadly, it would be a long time before we witness one.

Its not a more accepting society, ask gay kids in school that are abused and beaten .

Theres hundreds of gay/bi footballers, all know full well their life would be made a nightmare by other players and supporters if they were open about it.

We are a backward society compared to many other countries, and it shows very little sign of changing.

I don't normally care about gays one way or another, but there are certain situations where it does really matter. A couple of examples are the military and professional sports. I was in the military and would have felt very uncomfortable taking showers, sleeping and living that close with people I knew were gay. With many guys it would be a lot more extreme than just being uncomfortable and would probably lead to violence.
In professional sports there is a much higher level of testosterone than the general public so I would bet there is also a much lower % of gays than the general population. Also, if it could be detected at all, the straight guys would shove them out of the sports main stream long before they could reach the pro level.

there might be few reason of this,

1) footballers after match take shower all together, usally naked as how you can cleanse yourself when you are not naked. what means that if some of footballers would say that he is gay other would feel kinda strange under shower, not mentioning picking up soap from the floor

2) if guys win they jump one on another, hug eachother, for most of heterosexual players it could be kinda strange to hug gay teammate as you would be afraid that he could understand it as act of sexual interest

3)even thought we do accept gays the footballer is kind of HERO for young boys, a real man, somone who young boys fallow, so for this reason , the man who is suppose to be somone to fallow as a REAL MAN can not be gay!

4) please see Sopranos 6th Series to understand this problem among people who consider themselfs REAL MEN , tought guys, it shows that in proffesions where this that member of team is hetero is out of question.

PS: i do not consider gays as less men than heterosexuals, I am just poing here how big part of society sees it.,

the simple example of denying is masturbation, we know that everyone does it, even though most of people asked about this will not answer, not mentioning Christians, and please notice that some Football teams are conected often with religion as for examply Celtic and Rengers in Scotland.

i could list you all list of other examples but im sure you are smart person and one is enough

There's no good reason for it. The cause is probably the microculture that surrounds football. Despite communal showers and so on (which even the dimmest footballer would realise soon enough was not an issue) I think the people who would have the biggest problem with it would not be the players, but the fans. Fool them.

If you are going to post a question in this section I think it should be about English football, players or clubs, NOT about a past ,non English, footballers sexuality. It is totally irrelevant .

Find out about Justin Fashanu, former Norwich City and Nottingham Forest star striker, before you say there have never been any openly gay footballers.

His story is tragic and very sad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Fashanu
