There would have to be a word processor and it would have to have alot of storage. I would probably need something that is good with music and photoshop. Oh, yeah and not too expensive. Remember I'm a college student!

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,

the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.

these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.

one such website for laptop computers is :

or for a mac laptop

You can configure a decent computer from either Dell or HP for relatively little money. If you want to run photoshop i would recommend getting something with dedicated graphics instead of integrated graphics. What is your price range? See, I would recommend more certain specifications than certain brands.

An intel core duo or Pentium M
At least a gig of ram (you can always get a 512 with the computer and later buy another 512mb off ebay for $40-$100 depending on the type.)
Dedicated graphics card (the integrated graphics motherboards dont have a graphics slot for cards. So you dont have to get the best card right away, just get anycard that comes with it and change it later if you need to)
DO NOT get a large amount of internal space, For $120-$160 you can get an External 300GIG drive that will outlast the laptop. Use the internal drive (maybe 80-100gigs at most) to create content in class or lab or whatever and once you are done, transfer it to the external drive. This will also help to protect your data in case the computer gets a virus or some other issue you still have the external drive intact will all your data.
Get the computer with whatever the cheapest operating stystem because you can upgrade to Win XP Pro from www.academicsuperstore.com for like $89
Actually you can get all your software for a discount from there because you are a student.
Also you can save money by purchasing StarOffice (like $80) which has all the features and compatibility with Microsoft office for about $320 less!

Dell has the best prices and customer service. More money will get you a better computer but as a student you may not need to invest so much right now. Do some comparative pricing on-line once you decide on the model you want. You can check Froogle.com.

Last October, I got a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop for $449 from their website. I now know why... they came out with a whole new line of computers, and not even making mine anymore. But it works for what I need it to. It came with a 30 day trial of photoshop, but you'll have to pay more to have it come with it.
I recommend Dell computers, but be smart about it. I would check ebay.com (but be VERY vigilant and read EVERYTHING).

IBM has some good ones(a little expensive). If you get a laptop I would suggest that you get one that can go into a docking station. Check on Price Watch.

My son started law school last year and he bought Gateway 17 inch screen. He loves the computer but hates how much it weighs. If he had to do it over, he says he would get 15.4 inch.

what's in a brand anyway everybody asking what brand is better they're all just the same, it's how you use and take care of it. all you need to know is what specs you need to be able to do what it is you intend to run on your computer
