1/15 - 27/50

In order to combine these fractions they need to be expressed with the same denominator. To find a common denominator you can always multiply all the different denominators together (here giving 750) but this can sometimes make the arithmetic difficult because of the size of the resulting number.

Another method is to first find the prime factors of each denominator.

15 = 3*5
50 = 2*5*5

Each of these factors must appear in the common denominator, but no more than is necessary. In other words the common denominator must contain 3*5 and 2*5*5 so if we write 3*5 we see that wen need to add to this only 2*5 because the other 5 from the number 50 is already there.

The lease common denominator is 2*3*5*5 or 150. Next transform each fraction so is has this common denominator. If we multiply the left denominator, 15, by 10 we get 150, and we remember to multiply the numerator by the same number so we don't change the value of the fraction, but only the way it looks.

1*10/15*10 = 10/150

and

27*3/50*3 = 81/150

Now we can combine (subtract) the numerators, giving

(10 - 81)/150 = -71/150

(1 / 15) - (27 / 50)

The first step is to find a common denominator in order to subtract.

Quickest way is to multiply the two denominators, because then you are sure the result is a common denominator:

(15*50) = 750

(1/15)*(50/50) - (27/50)*(15/15)
(50/15*50) - (27*15/50*15)
(50/750) - (405/750)

Now just subtract the numerators, and use the single, common denominator:

(50 - 405)/750
= -355/750

Last step is to reduce. Divide both numerator and denominator by a factor that is common to both. Try 5 to start:
(-355/5)/(750/5) = -71/150

Looks like that is the simplest form. Try it on a calculator to verify your work. IF the calculator gives a decimal, then you have a simplest form fraction. If not, try other factors less than 10 to reduce further

You have the answer in other answers. That's differente ways to solve this problem. May question to you is:
numerator over denominator is a division if you want to solve a problem like that.

You understand the solution or you only want the way you can do to solve this.

I want that you understand, if this happen you can't ask this again.

I am a math teacher from Brazil, and i like your question. Your question is not to solve this problem but you want someone to talk with you about that, so I try.

1/15 - 27/50

= (1*50)/(15*50) - (27*15)/(50*15)

= 50/750 - 405/750

= -355/750

= -71/150

1/15 - 27/50

= (1*50)/(15*50) - (27*15)/(50*15)

= 50/750 - 405/750

= -355/750

= -71/150

Do your own homework. You won't learn anything if you try to get people on the internet to do it for you. It's rediculously easy as well.
