Usually if your car is running good, you are happy and content so you have either a smile (or a straight face at least) but when you drive something that always has SOMETHING wrong with it, you usually drive with a frown on your face rather than a smile... you're in a "lemon". A lemon stays parked in the shop more than in your driveway.
