Your passport must be valid for atleast 6 months from the expirery date so your boyfriend could not travel because its only 5 months and its not valid.
Why doesnt he just get another 10 year passport before August

Most Countries require that your passport is valid for 3 to 6 months after your visit. You can apply for another passport well before you present one has expired, the new one will run for the full ten years from the date of expiry of your present passport, so you don't lose anything by getting it early.

You don't have to wait for a passport to expire before you renew it - he can apply now and the new one will be valid untill 31/01/17.
Not sure about rules ih Spain though!

Yes you can, unless it is the Canary Island where you require 6 months valid after your return date. Mainland Spain, Majorca, Ibiza & Menorca only require 3 months valid after your return date.

you can if you renew your passport, otherwise no.
I was there last year, and they are adamant on the passports, I didn't have mine renewed either and thought I could get a visa or something similar, but no that was out of the question, whether my living in Ireland has anything to do with it I don't know, but that is how it was then.
