Any adult that has sex with a child is a rapist, pure and simple. They should be locked up and put away, forever.
I'm not talking about the senior-sophomore type of relationship when one turns 18 and the other 16, mind you. I'm talking about a violation of trust. Parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, pastors and priests, and teachers are in a position of great authority for children, entrusted with nurturing and protecting them, not taking advantage of them.
Perhaps the reason it seems more prevalent now is the media coverage. Perhaps the reason is because a number of children violated in the past have grown up with psychological and trust disorders that they think it's okay to do it when they're older. Perhaps it's because people are becoming less shocked by such things these days than they once were. Perhaps it's because teenagers today try to act more mature than they truly are, and older people fall into the mistake of actually believing them. Perhaps because many people with very fine minds choose careers other than teaching, and some of the teachers left are those with lower, lesser minds and souls... those who lose track of what the career is supposed to be and mean to a child.
In any case, it's just wrong.

I'm going to follow the trend and say it's not more common, just covered more. However, I think it has not only to do with media coverage, but with shifting public perception. For one, there are guys like you who may once have been afflicted with "hot for teacher" who find the stories sexy. That is not so different. What is different is gender perceptions.
In decades past, sleeping with an older woman, especially in a position of power, was a sign of manliness. It was not recognized as abuse before, but a favor to the youth, the victim. The betrayal of authority figure and teacher-pupil relations was not considered when it came to "eager" young boys and their attractive elders.
Sure, people were worried about "dirty old men," a topic brought to the cultural forefront first by Nabokov and then even into the pop scene by The Police, but I don't think it was until LeTourneau's affair with a sixth grader that society recognized the hideousness of the older female/underage male scenario.

I don't think it happens more today than it used to, but media coverage has improved. And not all teachers do so - the majority of teachers are responsible people who would never do something so morally reprehensible. There are bad apples (no pun intended) in every profession, including teaching. Just because there was a scandal in the Catholic Church with priests having sex with children doesn't mean that your local priest was doing so! It's the same with teachers.

This is the problem with the media...they print the few people who do this horrible thing, but don't print all the good things that are happening. For instance...Jay Leno makes jokes about teachers all the time, lowering the respect they deserve by quite a bit. I for one, am tired of hearing this.

lock them all up! They prey on kids because they are threatened by adult contact and want to be more in control. OR... they have a serious sexual appetite directed to the wrong place. Teachers are supposed to be mentors not hunters. It 's like a cop who abuses his authority or a priest or rabbi doing the same thing. And this all happens.....sadly.

I don't know what's up with them, but I think they are disgusting and sick! I mean people send their kids to school, thinking they are at least safe with teachers, and it's just sick. Just shows that this world is becoming more wicked and more wicked as the days go by.
