If the Hacker is good enough they can DO and SEE ANYTHING they want to with your computer just as if they were sitting at your keyboard. Most times they prefer to go unnoticed.
To avoid hackers you must avoid the Malware they send first to get in to your computer. Please read the safety precautions you can take at the end of my answer.
To help you avoid them you need to protect your computer with the following FREE software.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

yes they can, and they can do both by using worms and viruses. I have a firewall program that stops them, and gimves me there ip addresses, that I use to report them to the athorities. They will send a program to someone elses computer, to make there computer attack yours, but there is still a cookie trail that they can't hide, and this is what gets them busted. It all depends on how much the local authorities now about the technology. Luckely, I live by a Univeristy that speciallizes in cyber crime. If I let them have access to my computer firewall report, they can track the pieces of @#$% down.

Oh yes....it happens everyday, all day long. Malicious code is often sent through email, pop ups, and downloaded files. Do not underestimate those who wish to inflict harm on us innocent, naive computer users.

they usually put worms or virus on your computer to cause damage, my father-in-law had to replace a hard drive because of a virus. There are programs out there that they can sneak on your computer in emails that monitor the key strokes, so that they see everything that you type. Gotta love ID theft.

Yes it is real. Get a bi-directional firewall, anti-virus software and anti-spyware software. If you have windows, keep it updated.
