semiconductors - they are the basis of everything we take for granted in this world. Computers work because of semiconductors, mobile phones work off semiconductors, hell without semiconductors there would be no broadband (ref 1.2nm s/c lasers). Pretty soon, s/c lighting will replace tradational bulbs with power consumptions so small they will drastically (if implemented on a largescale basis) save energy.
I would also watch out for Quantum Well Solar Cells, which if Keith Barnham manages to do it, will mean free energy (+free hot water) for skyscrapers (and soon normal houses)
