Up to a point, yes. The people living near to the putative site would know it was a fake, I'm sure, which was always the problem with why people got so freaked out at the original "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. Actually, there were many problems with that one, including the fact that it did not happen in "real time;" the story did not stay within the time framework of the radio show. (I'm not claiming that was a government plot; indeed, Orson Wells was amazed that so many people took it so seriously.)

But what would be the government's motivation for staging such a stunt? They've been trying to say for years that there are no such things as UFOs. What would they gain from creating such a fake, only to have it be revealed as a fake, as it must be eventually.

Every astonishing piece of technology that you can buy is 20 years at least behind what the government plays with.

I don't know about you but I can buy some pretty cool stuff now a days and that kind of makes me think of what the Mounties or CSIS has.I can buy somthing to change my voice record somthing out of a pin hole hear a conversation accross the road etc etc. I never have because frankly I am still struggleing to figure out the VCR but thats not the point. GPS locators can find your position anywhere on the earth. Satilite images I can download off google earth show parked cars (fuzzy though they might be) . A staged landing of somthing anything isn't out of the realm of possibility at all. Projecting an image of say Jesus or Mary in the sky with a message - why not?

Again I am a joe Blow - imagine if you will what they have to play with and keep in mind your at least 20 years behind them and technolgy is said to be doubleing every couple of years now instead of decades.

If Ken Lay can fake his own death, of coarse the government could fake a UFO.

Sure they could, but why would they? With the Roswell cover up, they don't want any more attention on that subject.
