I think this all depends on which part of the service was crummy.

Is it the wait staff's fault if something is wrong with the food? No, that's the chef/kitchen's fault.

Is it the wait staff's fault if you're seated in a bad section? No, that's the host/ess' fault.

Is it the wait staff's fault if the guy refilling your water accidentally spills it on your head? Absolutely not.

Is it the wait staff's fault if they are rude or lazy? Definitely.

If my server is polite and attentive, then they always get a tip. Even if the food and atmosphere are horrible, they have still done the job they are there to do.

The trick is to leave a very small tip like a couple of pennies on the table. It is better than leaving no tip. If you leave no tip they will assume you just forgot to leave a tip. But if you leave a very very small tip then they will know you left them a tip but that they did something wrong. I would also inform the manager of the service. Let him know why you were unhappy. Sometimes the manager will discount your meal or offer you something to make up for the service. If nothing else Im sure he would talk to the server and resolve the situation.

Waiters earn about 2.95 per hour (depending on the restaurant) since the majority of their income comes from tips. I would leave a small tip ( 15% is standard, 15 - 20% is considered fair, over 20% is good service). Anything below 15% is below standard. The amount you tip will tell the waiter what you thought about their service.

Well yes because the waiter/waitress does not get paid a lot and they make most of their money on tips. You usually should leave a 20% tip, but if the service was bad than leave a 5-10% tip.

Servers only get paid around $2.35 an hour. The rest of their income comes from tips.

If the server was poor, then no, I would not leave a tip.
If the food was bad, or made incorrectly or I had to send it back several times, chances are that's the cook's fault and has nothing to do with the waitress/waiter.
In that case, since it's not their fault, yes, I'd leave a tip.

I think I did not leave a tip twice in my life time so it had to be very crummy service , but I do think that I deserve a good service.

the above person obviously does not want to be welcomed back.

you should at least leave 15%

I would call the manager over and complain.

I have done mystery shopping for many years and a good manager will take care of it.

service employees in restaurants only make between $3-$4 per hour plus tips

I would still give a tip even though the waiter may have given bad service. Maybe they're just having a bad day or something and a tip may lighten their mood and they'd be motivated to give better service.

No, and if you received bad service you should complain to the manager. A tip is a reward for GOOD service.

Depends on how bad the service was...I was in Germany last year and our waiter was a jerk. He was really rude to us and we waited for an hour and a half AFTER we were done eating for our bill and kept trying to ask for it but he would ignore us...
We added up our meals and left, he ended up following us to the store we went to next door claiming we still owed him 20 cents..so we gave him that but no tip. or maybe that was his tip...
