Is it because of religion?

Why don't they just cycle schedules so postal workers can work on sundays. If everyone wanted weekends off, we would have no eletricity, gas, firefighters, police, paramedics, or retail workers

I'm assuming you are referring to regular delivery, but because of special occasions (Mother's day, valentine's or Christmas and other days that may fall on Sunday) and special packages (express, or others) , and the accompanying charge, there are some packages delivered on Sunday. If it was because of religion then like Dukalink6000 stated, Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. They would RESPECT Seventh-day Adventist's request to have Saturday off if it was because of religion. Not everybody observes Sunday as a holy, rest day.

I think it's much more that it would cost so many additional employees to staff 24/7 than anything religious.

The USPS has been trying for several years to cut back home delivery to just five days a week ... just to save on personnel expense. Since they haven't been able to "sell" that idea ... they've been forced to raise postal rates a couple of times.

It's all about running an effective, efficient business. Keep in mind that the USPS is really independent from government funding now ... and it has to stand on its own profit/loss.

I don't know, my dad is a mailman. It might have to do with religion, because a lot of people go to church on sunday. I personally think that they don't send out mail on Sunday, because they got tired of seeing the mailworkers for six days all ready and want a break.

To keep expenses down. Mailed used to be delivered twice a day when the population far far less.

Why don't you or I work on Sunday. It's a day off. Don't you think that the mail carriers deserve at least one day a week off?

postal workers need a break too, or they're likely to go postal
