laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,
the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.
these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.
one such website for laptop computers is :

It really depends what you will use the computer for.
I have moved from a desktop to a laptop to save space in my home. I now do not need a dedicated space for work on my computer.
A desktop is always good to ensure you have a dedicated area to work from. For example, if you plan to work from home, you may find that a desktop will be a more productive option as you will have to work in the same location.
Overall, I think it really depends on what you will be using it for. Although a laptop may be more expensive, it will offer greater portability.
You can also get hard drives that connect to a laptop, or desktop via USB, so the old argument about expansion vs portability is not particularly relevant any more.

Let's keep the price fixed. The desktop you buy will undoubtedly be more advanced than the lap top you can buy with the same money. Ask yourself, do I travel a lot? Do I have internet access at local coffee shops? Or am I willing to drag around a lap top without wireless internet connection just to write in a park(hey, you may!)? If you do most of your work at home, then go for the desktop. If you are a traveler who needs to carry work around, take a lap top. If you are willing to spend an extra 200 bucks, get a PDA, and a keyboard(10 bucks). You can type(or use spreadsheets, make presentations, or even webpages) there, and later transfer this to your desktop. But please check if these qualities are available in your PDA. It's your call!

Nowadays, Laptops are replacing Desktops.
Trust me, there's really nothing really advantageous in buying a Desktop over a laptop. The only thing where Desktops do better are 'games'!. So, if you are gonna play lot of them, go for a Desktop.
Otherwise, get a laptop. It has got all the big capabilities of a Desktop.

I have a laptop, after having four or five desktops and I can honestly say, I will never return to a desktop. I can take it on holiday with me, watch films, play music, download photos immediately from my camera, show videos, keep in touch by email, etc., etc. It has 40 gb which is ample for me. I also have a peripheral hard drive of about 80 gb which I transfer out of date files and back-ups. Highly recommend a laptop............

Laptops cost more than desktops of comparable performance. There is also the longevity and versatility of desktops to consider. A desktop can be upgraded much easier than a laptop, giving it longer service life than a laptop. There is the convience of laptops to consider. I have both, but my laptop is strictly for business, word processing and online research, nothing intense.

you can get a decent laptop for around 7-800 these days...if u like lots of equipment or great graphics for gaming a desktop is cheaper and more powerful as well as more expandable and upgradeable. theres nothing wrong with a laptop though....if you do alot of traveling or ur in school i would get a laptop. if most of your computer usage is at home a desktop would be better.

Desktops tend to be cheaper as well as expandable. Laptops tend to be a bit more expensive and not as easily expandible. By memory I think you mean hard drive space. In which case desktops are nice because you can buy a 300GB hard drive for about $100 and add more if you need it later on. Laptops, you're kinda stuck wiht 60GB or so. You can buy external hard drives for your laptop but they tend to be more expensive and then you gotta lug that hard drive along with you. Also, if you're in/about to go to college check wiht your school because some school majors require laptops. All things you should look into.

I had a desktop computer and it worked okay. It cost alot, though. About a week ago I got a laptop and it worked great. It was pretty cheap too because I got it off of ebay. It works pretty well.

i'm all about the desktop! even though i can't take it with me everywhere...i really don't need to. usually there's a computer i can borrow the use of somewhere else. as for the other perks...like you said, space is a big one. also i hate the whole tiny aspect of a laptop. i like to be able to type on a keyboard that's big enough for my fingers as well as see what i'm typing w/out having to squint at the screen. :) and i like a mouse i can move. not one that i have to move so daintily i might break it if i sneeze. LOL.
