I'm sorry, if it's 6 years old, you really should replace it. If you do, don't put it in the rubbish bin. Recylce it, there are services that will wipe your drive and make it ready for use by someone else. If you've a CD burner, I recommend making back-up discs of all your data that you wish to keep.

You're probably going to have to buy a new computer soon, given the age of your current machine.
But if you want to try something cheaper, you could always take it to a computer tech/repair shop, explain the symptoms, and see if they can fix it for you. It's possible that your machine is simply full of various viruses/worms/spyware/adware that are slowing it down and making it misbehave. A shop can run a series of serious scan/removal programs that might eliminate the problem - if that's the problem. Or they might be able to pinpoint some other cause. But get an estimate first, to make sure the cost is within your budget. If the estimate is too high, shop around for a lower price. If all estimates are too high - you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new machine.

Before you go and buy a new one, try a few things:
1) Try to clean up any startup programs that you have accumulated over the years. Try RegCleaner.
2) Try downloading programs that help you clean spyware/adware. Try Spybot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft Adware SE.
3) Not sure why you can't defragment, maybe there are some disk errors with your hard disk. Try fixing it first by starting up a command prompt and type "chkdsk /F".
4) Adding memory usually helps. Just going from 256MB to 512MB helps alot.
If all things fail, well, you may have already spent too much time on resurrecting your PC. Time to move on, either DIY and upgrade, or get a new one. Intel has a new CPU that beats AMD hands down called Core 2 Duo, FYI.

Depending on how much you know about computers, you can re-format and reload all your programs. It's worth a shot before hitting the garbage. I did this with a very old computer and got it up and running with no errors.
I am also assuming you did a thorough virus check ofcourse. Malware and the like can really cause damage to your system as well.

Get a new OS( Windows Xp Pro.) get more RAM (512 or more), with this latest OS you will be able to defrag and more, also when you do upgrade try looking into having something like Mozilla or Opera as you browser or IE7, and of course you will have to spend some money but it won't cause you a new PC, please make sure you PC is clean(viruses,adware/spyware, etc)before any new installments.

New when what's out there doesn't run anymore.
I have a number of old computers. They run the old software beautifully.
The new laptop is connected to the Internet.
Prices are nothing like they used to be. You can get something decent in a desktop for about $500. Granted, that's still a lot...

You are probably using programs that require more Ram than your old computer has. Trying to upgrade the hardware in a computer that old is almost impossible. Dell has good cheap computers.

On a Mac, shift/administration/3 takes a image of the show. in case you press shift/administration/4, you are able to click and drag over the realm you favor; the image is taken once you launch the mouse button.

Joking aside, get it to a professional and ask what it would cost to repair. If the cost is higher than a new computer, get the new one.
Interesting that you can't defrag, though. That would be worth asking about.
