I cannot give you the exact examples but I do know that the FBI has done extensive research on this and has it down to a science. I would try a search on the "FBI + Lie detecting" and see what you get.

There are certain characteristics that point to someone not telling the truth, like sweaty palms/increased perspiration all over, reddening of the cheeks, increased pulse rate, increased breathing rate, increased bloodflow to the eyes --> eyes dart around, inability to look the other person in the eye... these could all point to someone lying. However, none of these signs are definitive; furthermore, many are able to control these and lie undetected. Additionally, the better you know a person, the easier it is to pick out their characteristics of lying.

Repeating a question to stall for time... Eyes shifting about too much as if afraid to make eye contact or as if searching for correct answers in mid-air... Either a thousand yard stare or blinking too often/rapidly... Shifting about in a seated position or shuffling from one foot to the other when standing... Repeating the same mannerism over and over again like smoothing or fiddling with hair, scratching nose, rubbing eyes or folding arms or crossing and uncrossing legs.

I wouldn't agree that men have more signs than women, but I'd bet the farm they lie more often.

Well, I think this stuff is totally fascinating. I love studying how peoples' brains work. Anyway, these should help:

* When the person, I'll call her "Sally" smiles falsly, the area around her eyes doesn't crinkle up, but stays flat and smooth
* If Sally talks with her hands ordinarily- if she is an Illistrater- she will use her hands less when she lies to you
* Just before Sally lies, she will have a microsecond worth of emotion that doesn't match her words. This goes for body language too.

It's not much, but it should help.

Don't know about the different signs, but check the eyes of someone telling you a tall tale. See if they look you straight in the eye, head movement, speech pattern, etc. But you knew all this.

watch the eyes. when a person is lying, the truth is told by the way they look in your eyes. their eyelids flicker or close, they cant look straight at you, mabey an eyebrow will flick up and down. the better you know someone, the easier it is to tell. ask any pro poker player and they will tell you if they can see your eyes, they can read your hand.

the most common one is when someone is asked a direct question and they lie in return,, they will normally look upto the left corner of the room and not be able to retain eye contact with you
