The meaning of the slang term of "that's the way the cookie crumbles" is in reference to any plan or situation that you wanted to come through for you that didn't pan out the way you had planned, people will say that. There are other slang terms too that mean the same thing. Such as:"that's the way the ball bounces", "that's the way the mop flops". It's always disappointing when something doesn't go according to the way(s) we plan things in our lives. So people often say these words as opposed to saying bad words or cursing.
