"American" usually refers to a person living in the U.S. "Pan-American" refers to everybody in the entire North and South American continents including Central America, Mexico, and the Carribean Islands.

Having said that, being Pan American is anybody regardless of race and culture who identifies themself as a citizen of any nation in the entire Americas.

To those who hate us, as an American (U.S.), I'm sorry for of the handful of idiots who have ruined our image by being disrespectful when traveling abroad, but there are a lot of good people here as well, so please don't judge us by a few rotten apples.

You can't have a whole American, both North and South, because they're different continents. South is mostly hispanic (as in Central-central is generally considered South). Mexico is North. America is north. Canada is north. I think greenland is european.
If you mean American like the country, then I would say an American citizen. but you can't have just an American, and include both north and south america, because there are so many different countries and cultures in that.

There is a confusion that still won't disappear. When we say "Americans are pigs" or "Americans are spreading democracy" , we refer to the government and people who are born or got citizenship in United States of America. We never say something like "United States Americans invaded Iraq" (for example) or "United States Americans fix the oil prices", we just tell "Americans" are doing it, because those things are not done by Canadians, Mexicans, Argentinians, Brazilians etc. etc

The country where if you were born here and respect your country and never committed a crime, you have to be a slave to intruders who just come in to take our jobs, steal our healthcare, take all our other benefits, get cheap or free education, only to send half the money back to their own country and talk about how they cannot wait to go back to their own country. The true Americans are the ones who took the time to learn English, had manners, actually earned the job they got didn't have to get extra credit through affirmative action, and they know how to clean up after themselves when they go the bathroom.

Fat ,Lazy and rude usually are the first things to come to mind. most ppl outside of america (me) can't stand american's and have had several BAD experiences with these ppl. although I can't speak for every American when I say they don't care about any other culture and that they really do believe they are the "BEST" but I have heard it from many of them personally.
