As posted above, I found a small turtle in my pool. It had a yellow stripe on its head. Does anyone know what type of turtle it was? Sorry if i cant be more specific. Not an expert on Turtles.

It sounds like a cooter to me, but it could be a yellow bellied slider.

Actually, snapping turtles have a little yellow/orange in the head... If the shell is bumpy, it is a snapping turtle. If the shell is smooth, I can be a painted turtle or a yellowbellied slider (YBS).

Here is a photo gallery of all the turtles in the US:

Since won't say which state you're in, check this state by state turtle listing:

This will help you narrow it down.

The best thing you can do is find the nearest local waterway and release it by there. Do it in the evening, jus before dusk so it can hide and not get eaten too quickly. :)

Would be nice to know where in the wide world you are...might be able to narrow it down a bit...FOR sure its NOT a snapping turtle. My guess without more discription would be a map turtle. All sliders and cooters have multiple yellow lines that run down the sides of the head. Your best bet....click on photos in your web browser...then put in U.S. turtles in the search bar....then hit go
You say WAS...does that mean its NOT anynore??? Z

The belly is a great way to tell-

Red, red-orange with squiggly designs? Painted turtle (this is MY guess!)

Greenish/yellowish? Any of a dozen cooters or sliders.

Smallish, barely there, kind of cross-shaped? Snapping turtle

abdomen colour? purple or purple/orange will be a Painted turle. Yellows and vegetables will be distinct cooters and sliders. What do you mean by 'hammer shaped head'? it may have some ear infections or abscesses.

no. it's probably a cooter. kinda like a cousin to the red eared slider that everyone knows. cooters usually have a yallow underneith and when older black spots on the bottom too.

if it didn't try to bite you it's not a snapper. the best i can tell you is to go to the library and get a book on turtles of the united states and look it up.
