Our solar system is NOT called the Milky Way. The Milky Way is the name of the galaxy that our star system resides in with other star systems.
The name of our sun is Sol. Solar system is thus the name of our star system. This can be confusing at times because solar system can also be used to refer to other star systems in which the primary star is not called Sol. Technically, however, other systems are more accurately described as star systems rather that solar systems.

First of all, forget those answers you've received that refer to the "universe" and "galaxy" and "Milky Way." None of those have anything to do with the name of our solar system. We live on a planet called Earth. Earth is one planet in our solar system (there are nine others, plus the sun). Our solar system is located inside a galaxy called the Milky Way. The Milky Way galaxy is one of billions of other that are located within the universe.
One of the names for our sun is "sol." From that we get the name sol-ar system.

First of all, Solar System is NOT (I repeat, NOT) a common name. Therefore if you go to another galaxy and see some planets around a star similar to our sun, you CANNOT call it "solar system". At that time STAR SYSTEM would be the appropriate word.
The word "solar" comes from Sol, which is the name of our beloved sun. Our Sol in turn, is one of the billions and billions of stars that are scattered throughout the universe. Since here we have nine planets revolving around our Sol and acting like a system, we call it Solar System, meaning the system of Sol.

Good question!
Some of the people tht have answered u dont even know tht Milky way is the name of our galaxy not the solar system.
Actually the basic pronounciation is the planetary system. The name of our planetary system is the solar system.derived frm word Sun which is the name of our star which gives solar energy so the planetary system formed by our sun is known as solar system(name "sun system" is awkward to pronounce hence it is kept as solar system)We cannot name any planetary system in our Universe as solar system. So wht basically is tht u should ask question like this .
"What is the name of our planetary system?"
Ans: Solar system
I hope tht ur understanding wht Iam trying to say
Good bye!

As you can see by reading some of your replies, humans are not too reliable in naming their own solar system. Some confuse it with the universe, and others confuse it with our galaxy. Ah, isn't ignorance wonderful!?
The name of our solar system actually depends on what alian life form you are talking about.
The 45432 intelligent species of 72231 star system have named our solar system 94709, which is sort of cute since that is the zip code of Berkeley, CA.
The _TTT_ intelligent species of _UUU_ star system have named our solar system _SSS_, which is about the closest they can get to pronouncing Solar System. They tried. Group hug.
Each intelligent species in our galaxy has its own name for our solar system. Except the nonverbal ones and they don't label things, which makes it difficult for them to avoid foods with trans fatty lipids in them.
