It was Brett Harts last match before he went to WCW. Vince didn't want him to go to that brand as the then WWF champ, so in a manipulative move he told only Shawn Michaels and the referee that after the match went on for a while once Michaels pinned Brett to hurry up and make a 3 count and ring the bell. Which is what happened and Hart never saw it coming. It was bad B/C it was in Bretts home town ( after the match Hart spit on Vince) and Hart has been rather bitter ever since.

The incident was featured in the 1998 movie Wrestling with Shadows, a documentary about Hart's life as a WWF wrestler.
Basically Bret Lost To Shawn Michaels,And it was supposed to be the other way around,Vince Screwed Bret.......

The Montreal Screw job happened at Survivor Series 1997 in Montreal.
It was Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels. (Earl Hebner is the referee)
Bret was leaving for WCW and had the world heavyweight title. Vince wanted him to lose it, but Bret had a claus in his contract that gave him creative control, so he wanted to just give it up respectfully at the next Raw because he hated hbk and didn't want to lose to him. So the match was going and hbk had him in a sharpshooter and Vince ran down and yelled to ring the bell and even though Bret never tapped out, they said hbk won.

wasn't it the other way around bret hart had the sharp shooter on HBK then macmahon called for the bell and hbk won the belt and bret hart spit on him?ne ways if u watch a documentary about him he made himself it explains it.
