I am 9 weeks pregnant and I also have anxiety issues. Before becoming pregnant, I was on medicine for this problem. The doctor told me I could take Benedryll to take the edge off my nerves for now until I got far enough along to take my medicine again. The package says its for allergies. How does it help take the edge off nerves?? thanks.

Lots of antihistamines, especially benedryl, have a sedating effect. The active ingredient, diphenhydramine, is also the main ingredient in over the counter sleeping medicines like sominex.

Compare the active ingredients on the boxes next time you are at the store and you will see.

Escitalopram (Lexapro) may cause dizziness. Usually a single pill will not cause dizziness lasting more than 24 hours but it is possible. If the dizziness is a feeling of disequilibrium (vertigo) it may be from the escitalopram or it may be from sinus symptoms. In either case if you have vertigo the correct treatment is to take over the counter meclizine 25 mg one four times daily as needed. If this does not resolve the vertigo over the weekend then a visit to your physician is warranted. I ask my patients never to take oral diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and I wish that the Food and Drug Administration would take it off of the market. It is a so-called first generation anti-histamine and as such it has a very long list of potentially disabling side effects. Diphenhydramine will not help with vertigo nor would other anti-histamines. Should you need an anti-histamine in the future for allergies or itching I would recommend over the counter loratadine (Claritin). Although the package says to take 10 mg once daily the correct dose is two daily which may be taken at the same time. So far as alprazolam (Xanax) is concerned this is another drug that I wish was no longer available. The FDA did consider withdrawing the drug several years ago but did not as so many people were taking it. Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine (an anti-anxiety medication) with a triazolo ring added to the benzodiazepine molecule. The triazolo ring makes the drug unusually addictive even at low dosages taken for only a week or two. There were two other triazolo benzodiazepines neither of which is currently used. Estazolam (Prosom) was voluntarily withdrawn from the US market by the company over concerns for it addiction potential. The other triazolo benzodiazepine is triazolam (Halcion) which is so restricted by the FDA that it is almost never prescribed. Burt Reynolds acting career was side-lined for decades due to addiction to triazolam which was marketed as a sedative hypnotic drug for sleep. Anyone may send medical questions to me at any time at johnerussomd@jhu.edu. I hope that your problem resolves and I wish you the very best of health.

I dont know how it could take the edge off your nerves, benadryll does make some people including me, very drowsy. Maybe he thinks that if you get drowsy you will be to tired to complain. LOL it works for me. Personally I would advise against that. I wouldn't think that would be safe for the baby. Maybe ask a nurse or call the # on the back of the benadryll package or go on the their website. I would get another opinion before taking this medication.

Benadryl is an antihistamine used for allergies and itching.. but some medications although were formulated for one thing seems to work for other conditions as well... Benadryl can act as a mild sedative and this is probably why your Dr. has recommended that you take this in the early stages of pregnancy.. although it might not work as well as your previous medication in can help with taking the edge off right now.. Hope this helps!!!
If your dr. has said that you can take Benadryl then it is safe.. he would not tell you take a medication that would harm your baby....
i have taken Benadryl during pregnancy!!!
Congratulations!!!!!

Benadryl can make you drowsy. I guess if you're drowsy, then you're not edgy.
It's a pretty safe medication, so those who can't sleep take it to help them.
It's also good to take Benadryl before taking a trip on an airplane. It opens your sinuses, so your ears don't hurt as much from the cabin pressure & altitude.

The active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine, which is also the active ingredient in many sleep aids. It makes you drowsy;therefore, reducing the edgy feeling.

I'd say it probably has some type of downer in it, like codine or something similar.
