Very, if you value yourself to be unique and consider your perspective or opinions on all or some subjects to share the same quality of uniqueness.

"Je pense, donc je suis." Renee Descartes (For those of you who wish a translation: I think therefor I am)

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself" Friedrich Nietzsche

What makes an individual? In this age of indulgent self-expression, can one not say that this cult of individuality is really just following the masses? Everyone wants to be "an individual." So they go and listen to music that is supposedly underground or controversial, they dress in unique ways (though not really since everyone else in their clique does it too), they try so hard to not fit in, but by doing so, don't they just fit in with the fragmented factions that make up this patchwork of society?

Think about it! Individuals are the movers and shakers of our world. Einstein, Edison, Newton, Columbus, DaVinci, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lewis & Clark, Roosevelt, JFK, MLK, the Clintons, Curie, Hemenway, the Guthries, Hoffman, Katherine Hepburn, Steinham, Ghandi, Sagan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, even Elvis.

Bad guys are also individuals: Stalin, Hitler, Hussein, Tito, that crazy Korean leader, etc.

So, stop following the crowd, become a unique individual and rock our world! (In a good way, Please!)

Just be who you are and don't worry about it.

In other words, being an individual doesn't mean going out of your way to not conform: it's natural that you should want to be around people that are at least somewhat like you.

As to what is the correct balance between conformity and non-conformity, you'll have to figure that out for yourself -- but here's a little suggestion:

If you find that your version of non-conformity isn't acceptable to the crowd that you hang with, you need to find a new crowd.
