What strange cover versions have people heard. When I say strange, this includes songs that people think the artist doesn't seem to fit, and just generally odd versions. The only examples I can think of include Johnny Cash doing Depeche Mode, Erasure doing Elvis Presley and Nouvelle Vague doing Joy Division covers.

There are that many cover versions out these days it's annoying, and most of them aren't a patch on the original.

The worst ones for me though are the ones that take little snippets out of songs and loop them for fun. Like that cover of Michael Jackson's Say, Say, Say it's bloody awful.

And I heard one recently using Bronski Beats Smalltown Boy, utter crap.

Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails 'HURT' & as you said Depeche Modes 'Personal Jesus'. The Scissor Sisters done a cover version of Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' and 'All along the Watchtower' originally by Bob Dylan but was covered by the great Jimi Hendrix. Also at the NME Awards Sugababes done a cover of Arctic Monkeys 'I bet that you look good on the Dancefloor'

Check out Me First & The Gimme Gimme's they're fantastic. Also try China White. They did a cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Hei'ghts" and it completely confused me. I heard it on the radio and although it sounded familiar I couldn't place it. I had to wait for the DJ to announce both the artist and the tune.
Totally awesome. Must hunt down a copy for myself now that I think about it.

Haycey Dixie's covers of things like the ace of spades and coldplay's lets talk are quite funny. Neil Sedaka also did a cover of smells like teen spirit which was excellent - had a sort of swing vibe to it and as a bonus you could actually make out the words.

I've heard punk covers of Wannabe by the Spice Girls and Barbie Girl by Aqua. They are much better than the originals.
