it wont eat, is slow and drowsy looking, looks as if its trying to breathe really hard and you can see its gills flaring, fins are crumbly, etc.

It is what fish do...they live, then die...they are not long lived as a rule, but some are fantastic...Koi and Goldfish, if treated properly, live many, many years, and get very big...but these fish need lots of space. They do not do well in a small bowl or aquarium. You won't need to ask, the fish will be laying on the bottom or, after a day or so, be floating. It doesn't pay to get attached to fish...they are pretty, very relaxing to watch, but they are fish with no great intelligence, and certainly no fondness for you. They look to you for food, that is about it.

Well for one thing, he said DYING not DEAD, and of all my fish that have died, I've never actually had on belly up.
My last fish that died, darted about rapidly for aboud two days, gills flared rapidly, then didn't move much. In the morning he was laying on its side at the Bottom of the tank.

Becomes lethargic. Hangs at the surface behind the filter or at the bottom behind rocks and plants. Stops eating. Clamps fins.

I acutally had a fish die once. When they jump out of the tank in search of a shopping mall, that's when you know!

they hang out in one place toward the bottom of the tank.
They start tilting, or sometimes right before signs of ick show up they start darting around, and banging into things.
Remember though sometimes they may just be sick , and some med will help them.

Sometimies their scales will fade or turn brown. Also, lowered levels of activity are not good.
