Listen to the people you have underneath you. Make a decision and carry it through unless it becomes obvious you chose the wrong one. Always do what you say you are going to do. Treat everyone the same.. with respect and honesty. Remember you are a servant and your job is to help other people get their jobs accomplished. Don't become too full of yourself and feel you should throw your weight around for your own personal gratification. Know what you are talking about, try to be fully informed. Don't ask anyone to do something you would not do yourself. Stand up for people underneath you. If you expect loyalty you should also give it. Don't be afraid to take responsibility for your actions even if they are wrong. Remember people underneath you are always watching you and take your example as how to act.

The most important quality of a successful leader is the ability to pick the right people to be the leader of. If the leader has that, no other skills are necessary; people will do everything that needs to be done on their own.
