runs ok when battery fully charged, but had a voltmeter on the battery and when ticking over its making about 14 ish volts, if i rev it the volts drop to around 13 volts, now, if i put the lights on the volts drop to a critical level, if revved its ok but on tick over with lights on it will drop so much that it cuts out. Changed the battery, reg/rec, plugs and coils, dont know where to look next, also the reg/rec and wiring that plugs into it gets very hot, is this supposed to happen? could there be a short somewhere? help!!!

It sounds like the alternator is not functioning, have you checked it out? Does the battery constantly drain? A rough and ready way to check if alternator functioning is to put lights on and rev engine, the lights should get slightly brighter. It sounds like its your charging system, not your iginition system. So I would say changing coils/ spark plugs will make no difference. Try a friendly mechanic if you are unsure.

You have a problem with the voltage regulator... the battery should read 14V with the engine running, but as you load up with lights the voltage should rise to about 15v... i guess your alternator is OK.. check the regulator first..

Is that the right headlight and bulb that came on the bike? Could be drawing to much power if not. Also could cause the wires to get hot.

sounds like a bad earth connection.
But firstly, check the obvious, are your battery terminals loose?
