some kind of plant life is healthy, be it algae or other
keeps the nitrates down and supplies oxygen
2 in a 55 should be ok as long as they're small
they will fight at night if they're too crowded so if you start seeing torn up fins etc...

you'll need to start feeding the little fellers

check out plecofanatics.com
it'll blow your mind

A tank can have too many algae eaters, but I don't think that two in a tank that large is too many. If they eat all the algae, there are other things they can eat, like regular fish food. Even if they eat all the visible algae, there is still more in the tank, and that is a healthy level. Just don't use algae treatment on it, because that will get rid of it completely and your algae eaters will starve.

Algae, in a fish tank, is only healthy for the algae eaters. The lack of algae is only harmful to the algae eaters which have to eat it or starve. As long as there is enough for them to eat, but not enough to be a detriment to the other fish, everything is good.

I would think so..however, depends on size of tank. If there are too many algae eaters you may end up having to feed them as well as your regular fish. I only use one large algae eater per tank.

If your talking about the chinese algae eaters/golden algae eaters, I personally wouldn't keep them. They have a nasty reputation for attacking the other fish if there's not enough algae for them to eat. If your talking about plecos, they usually get to be HUGE and live to a ripe old age, and yes, they can outgrow your tank, despite the rule about *most* fish growing to their environments.

Hope I helped!

I think 2 in a 55 gallon is fine. Actually I would suggest maybe a few more unless of course you enjoy cleaning the tank yourself. For that my guess is 5 would be perfect. More than that might be pushing it.

I agree with the first answer and also if they run out of algae you can get algae pellet food from petsmart or petco.
