Look up iconoclasm.

It's the destruction of religious icons for sectarian or political reasons.

Sometimes because of literal interpretations of the 2nd commandment, the one about making graven images.

Sometimes for totalitarian dictatorship's purposes of making the ruling party, dictator etc. the absolute center of the ideological universe, the font of cosmic truth as it were.

The story you're positing sounds like some kind of folk history crap, never happened, made up for 'moral education' of children and adults with childish minds.

Hmm, I know there was a lot of religious art in the Renaisance (that can't be spelled right) period. I don't remember anything about banning religious drawings though.

I have studied art history before but I'm not sure what you're talking about. I guess it could've happened under a Communist regime in Europe or something since they would ban religious stuff.
