I found this bug struggling to get out of an air vent in my home. The bug was too large to get out. Once I killed it with Raid I was able wedge it out of the vent. I would like to know what kind of bug it is. Should I be concerned? The bug was about 3 inches long. Please see front and back post mortem shots.

Yes, this is a potato bug (I'm in California too). One night I was in bed asleep and then felt something crawling on me. I bolted up in bed, flung the creature off, turned on the light and on the floor lay the culprit! Scared me half to death! I grabbed a flyswater and killed it. Later I found out it was the really harmless potato bug but it is so big it is scarey looking.

Ick...I've never seen one like that. Contact your local university's bug department or check out their website for a page on local insects.

That looks like spawn of Satan. That is the scariest looking bug I have ever seen. I don't think I would have been able to kill it.
