Because when white first migrated to the new world. They also brought in new infectious diseases into the new world, where the diseases were common in the Euroasian Mainland but did not exist in the new world. So aborigines were not immuned to them hence killing many of them by natural causes. The Aborigines have been insolated for centuries hence they experienced fewer epidemics before, and their immune system were susceptable to attacks from more diseases.

The Brits used to export criminals into Australia. I guess that accounts for much of the population there. It is also a commonwealth country, so a lot of Brits emigrate that way, and have done for a long time. The Aborigines were probably forced into a very localised area when the Brits arrived, and so the white population spread, and the Aborigines stayed a tight-knit community.
However, the answer to this is also that the world is very accessible these days. You may as well ask why there are so many non-English people in England. I live in the London borough of Newham, which is the most ethnically diverse borough in England. At present I would say the majority of people in my area are Polish and Romanov Gypsies, however, these are a temporary population. Before it was Kosovans. The more permanent population is Asian dominated. Asians, Polish people, and Romanov Gypsies are not the people who started in this country, but that doesn't make them any less welcome. Also, hardly anyone in England is pure English due to the number of invasions it has been subjected to throughout time.
The intergration of other races has had a similar effect of Australia.

The British came to Australia and invaded it, whilst exterminating the aborigines. Therefore, most Australians are descendants of Brits. The descendants of surviving aborigines (of which there were very few) however, still exist today.

After it was found by James Cook, the English explorer, England used Australia as a prison. The worst of the English inmates were sent to Australia, as the other prisons were debtors prisons which were over-filled. Many English murdered the indigenous people, and the English government did little or nothing to slow or stop these crimes. Furthermore, the English government did what Andrew Jackson did to the Indians of America: moved the natives out of populated areas against their will, the travel killing many, and also treated the natives sub-humanely. As this was going on, the English multiplied and took over. Typical of the Brits.

The ancestors of some of the white people in Australia were criminals from Britain - that's how they got there. The Aborigines are still around, but I guess not near the cities.

Australia was originally colonized by England way back when just like Canada, the USA and many other countries. People went there to try to start fresh or were sent there as a punishment for stealing a loaf of bread to feed their families. The forefathers of many white Australians were actually murderers, theives and common criminals who were deported to live out their lives in never never land.

colonisation!!! it was a terrible mistake, they declared the land as 'terra nullus' an empty land void of any humans there, and the English decided to ship lots of prisoners there to work this land. Of course there were people there, belonging to various tribes, who now are called strangely Aboriginals, but in fact they are real people just like the English who have their own culture (vastly different from the English one).

I think there are more Asians in Australia than there used to be. The native people got a really raw deal from the European settlers (and still do), how many have you seen on 'Neighbours' recently?
