I got some really disapointing answers the first time, I'm trying it one more time.
The car has 54000 original miles and in great shape, it has a new battery, it started one time after I shifted the handle from park to drive and back a couple of times, I thought it was the neutral safety switch but that seems to be ok , it was running perfectly when it was shut off, it doesn’t seem to be sending any power to the starter, I have tried to start it in neutral, and all of the electrical components inside work (dome light, stereo, ventilation fan), the car does not have an anti theft device that I know of and there is no flashing anti theft light in the dash.
Yes the car is old, but I believe in taking care of cars and getting the most use out of them as you can, I think its ridiculous to buy a new car just because your old one has a small problem.
Thank you to those of you who give an honest effort to help!
If some of this sounds odd, you should read the answers I got the first time.

CHEAPEST FIRST!!!!...turn the key on to where the dash "check lights" all come on but don't try to start the car, now put the car in reverse and see if the "back-up" lights are on...If not the start-neutral switch only needs adjusted

I know you are going to try all the obvious. check for power at the starter solenoid terminal while someone turns the key. if you have power, you may have a bad starter. check the battery terminals. I mean actually remove them and clean them. If you dont have power at the starter terminal then check the neutral safety switch.

I had the same problem yesterday as you and had a new
battery installed , the termini, terminal on top of the batteries
were loose.
Today , I went for a oil and lube and the car wouldn't start up again, and after tightening them again it started fine and drove
beautifully.
Monday , I will check with a garage and have new ones put on , if
for nothing else than peace of mind. I do not want to get stuck
somewhere again. They look pretty corroded to me and even
though they were tightened twice , i cannot guarantee they will
not come loose again.

All I can say it could be your starter solenoid. Or your starter might have shorted out. Couldn't hurt to have both parts tested at the auto parts store. GM has the selinoid on top of the starter.

Best guess, would be something in the ignition switch. I had a skylark once, it was, I think, possessed by the Devil. It threw a rod on my birthday as the final insult.

try checking out your neutral safety switch,it coud be bad.or try banging on your starter,it could be stuck.did you check your batt. terminals, and your batt.ill tell you something you might try,try running a wire off the batt.(positive side)to the starter and see if it turns over,if it does then it must be your switch.
