The very earliest that a test could *possibly* be positive is 8 days post-conception. It takes at least 6 days for a fertilized egg to reach the uterus to start implanting. Until implantation, the zygote isn't attached to your body in any way, so it can't cause any physical changes (including producing HCG--the hormone detected by pregnancy tests). It then takes at least 2 days for the implanted zygote to start producing enough HCG to be measured.

Some women, however, have implantation a week later than the above, so this is a *minimum*.

Most home pregnancy tests work best the day that you expect your next period, although some can detect up to 4 days before you expect it ( read the box) If you were charting then you could know sooner.
go get a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive. My Doctor recommended it to me and after 1 year of trying I got the book. It worked the very next month. It turns out that my timing was wrong due to mis-information. I hope it helps you, too! It's not only about getting pregnant. It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths!
