Wow, if she is paying for it her self you should not only let her but help her. That is a big responsibility for a 11 yr. You should give her that responsibility it will build trust with your daughter so when she turns 16-18 you can talk with her. But make sure she know the responsibility that comes with getting the phone and the consequences of not paying the bill. And I think that you should also monitor her call log and make sure she is talking to the right people (people her own age). Good luck!

There is no need for an eleven year old to have a phone. She may think that it is really cool and probably wants it because
a)The media has influenced her into thinking she needs one
b)She thinks she will be able to talk to her friends all the time
c) She thinks all of her friends have them

I got my first phone when I was twelve (I am fifteen now), and I seriously, never used it. I would say at 13 or at least when they enter high school is when they need one. Think of it this was: How often is she places that there is not a phone to contact you on. If the answer is more than twice a week, then you *might* want to consider getting her a phone.

Get her a prepaid phone and make her pay for the minutes herself. You can help her on buying the actual phone though. If you tell her that she will have to pay with her own money if she wants to talk, she will *most likely* be less interested in purchasing one.

I helped to convince my daughter to get one of those that has restrained calling. I think there is way to many cell phones because people don't pay attention to whats going on around them, but for young people to have one to be able to call 911 or mom or dad YES YES YES

Well, how is she going to pay for it? I can't imagine that she has a job. Maybe it would be best if you feel she needs a phone she needs to know that it's not for idle chit-chat. You need to set some rules and work out a plan for her to do chores to pay for it. There are alot of different options out there for phone plans. If she wants it just to have it I would have to say no...I really don't think it's necessary.
