As a person who teaches friends to drive, I would suggest that this comes down to a bad experience you have been in , or witnessed.
The best thing, Is , if you want to drive, and you are scared, is start driving , somewhere quiet, to overcome your fear.
the more you drive, the more relaxed and calm you will become.
Just each time you drive, try to drive that bit further, but dont push yourself , if you get nervous , pull over,

It sounds like you need more experience in more than suburban neighborhood traffic. Try driving with another experienced driver until you feel more comfortable on the road by yourself. Be sure that this person is calm and does not scream or panic when they're on the road, no matter what the situation. Traveling with other timid drivers will only increase your anxiety. Get as much experience on beltways, expressways, and highways as you can. And most of all, don't give in to this fear...the only way to overcome this is to keep at it. Practice not only makes perfect, but it builds confidence too. Hope this helps. Be safe out there!

There will always be someone who thinks your way of life is strange or crazy. They don't matter. There is nothing wrong with not driving if you don't want to. Statistically, road accidents account for the highest number of injuries and death than any other mode of transportation. I've know six people who've died in car accidents (through no fault of their own) and I know two people who've lost significant use of their body because of major car accidents. It is not just a matter of how safe you drive, but everyone around you. My aunt does not drive because she was in an accident as a passenger when she was a teenager. She is completely dependent on other people to drive her places, but she's fine with that. Just think, our ancestors did just fine without cars for all the centuries before the car was invented. It's fine to walk, ride a bike or ride with others. If you can function without driving, then don't drive until (and if) you are ready.

I used to be afraid to drive, cause my dad died in a car accident, and my grandparents always tell me I'm just like him so I was kind of afraid at first, I'm not really sure how I can help cause me I just tried and sorta got over it.
edit: I know try driving at night (early morning like 3am or something), no one around, that's what I do (most of the time) I'm 17 by the way just started 2 weeks ago.

You can, if you have enough will to face your fear. I'm afraid of heights, I mean very afraid. But, whenever I climb, I relax. The key is to relax. I also started driving. I was very eager to do it, but, however, I had lots of emotions. I even lost control of the steering wheel, and only because I was too tense. The next day, I thought only about pleasant things and I drove a lot better. I wish you good luck.

I know it can be fearful to drive. I've was almost in a would-be-fatal accident last summer. But all I can advise you is that you need to drive to get around. I would drive as safe as I can, within speed limits, and safe distances from other cars. It's certain fears that keep us from living our lives. There is too much going on in people's lives to be overtaken by fears that hinder us from success. Just drive safe and be confident in your driving and you should be okay.

When I started driving I would go to the bathroom about eight times before I could even sit in the drivers seat. I tend to daydream a lot so I was mostly scared of coming to just in time to see somebody disappear under my tyres. It helps to pray, but in the end you have to be scared and do it regardless.
and it does get better with time.
Lotsa luck!!

maybe you should try to re-teach yourself to drive. go drive in big empty parking lots and maybe go over driving laws. it might help you feel more secure in your ability to drive. i mean, driving is a bit dangerous, but i trust that if you're 21, you've been driving for a while (regardless of whether you've been scared in the past or not) and thus have a lot of experience. so, my suggestion would be to just refresh your memory on the basics, practice in situations where the danger and stress levels are nil, and re-learn to drive with confidence :D
best of luck!

hahah, I think your kinda lucky.
I dunno how to drive yet and I dont have a lisence.
I'm 19 and I have to deal with all my friends who have cars and freedom.
Think of the freedom you will have. I have to deal with my parents fitting me into thier schudule and most times I end up dealing with my dad who doesnt seem to like to take me anywhere.
I'm afraid of him , but he is the only one who can teach me to drive. If you already know how to drive great, if not , get over the fear fast.
Also, yes it has to be alittle wierd and embarrasing if you are afraid to take yourself out because that seems to be the most basic thing to do in society ( just drive). You only get over the fear with practice.
