Question

ok, the question is to perform the indicated operations. If possible, reduce to lowest terms.
/ means over (numerator over denominator, not division)
1) 5/24 + 7/30

2) 1/15 + 27/50

3) (1/2 + 1/3) divided by 5/8

i can get the answers, and i did, but the thing is my teacher wants it in a different way. he wants us to factor the denominator, then get the answer that way. any help would be really appreciated.

Okay the first step to solving this is to find a common denominator. for #1 you have 24 and 30 as denominators. The simplest way to find a common, is to multiply the two together. This gives you 720. So if you rewrite the denominator as 720, you need to keep the numerators proportionate. You do this by figuring out what you multiplied the respective denominators by, and multiplying that number likewise to the numerator. ie:
5/24 becomes 150/720 and 7/30 becomes 168/720
Now you add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same. Giving you 318/720. To simplify the fraction, you find common divisors of both the numerator and denominator, ie 2 and 3 in this case. Simplified you answer is 53/120.

2. The same steps as above, but with other numbers. 1/15 becomes 50/750 and 27/50 becomes 405/750. Add them together giving you 455/750, which simplifies to 91/150.

3. Same steps as above until you get to the divide by 8 part.
1/3 becomes 2/6 and 1/2 becomes 3/6. Add them and you get 5/6. Now multiply by the inverse of 8 in fraction form (1/8) and you answer is 4/3.

(24 goes into 120 - 5 times so multiply 5 x 5, 30 goes into 120 4 times so multi 7 x 4

you must find the common denominator of each once you have a ridiculously high answer you reduce it ex: 4/8 (4 is half of 8 so your answer would be 1/2)
