1.They are present in hot deserts which are scarce in water so in order to reduce the loss of water by Transpiration from the surface of the leaves, its leaves are reduced to spines.This is a type of adaptation of the plant.
2.There is also another reason for bearing spines : it prevents or rather protects the cactus plant from being eaten by the desert animals. It thus ensures the survival of the plant long enough to reproduce & carry on the survival of its species.

Cactus grow in dry areas, where thirsty animals would love to chew on a juicy cactus leave. The spines are an adaptation to the dry environment. Evolution!

It's a survival mechanism. It keeps them from being eaten so that they can reproduce, because animals and people that have been in the desert for a long time tend to be desperate to eat anything, so the spines are a deterrent that allows the cactus to survive.

Well it has 2 functions basically:

1. It acts as survival mechanism so that animals are not eager to eat it..OUCH!!

2.the spines are actually leaves. These leaves have gone under evolution so that little water is evaporated from the plant. This helps it survive in desert climate where water levels are extremely low.

the "catus" ( u spelled it wrong) has water and other minerals that help you and other animals stuck in the desert so to protect those substances it has needles to keep away predators
