my comp. had only 256mb of RAM so I got 2- 512mb of RAM cards and everything seemed to work fine but when I checked the memory it said I only have 512mb instead of 1g, the report showes that I have 2 slots but only one showes up (512mb) .
Did I Miss something in the startup that would have reconized the other card?

Make sure you snapped in the ram properly. Sometimes, it can be difficult to put the ram stick in. If the ram sticks are identical, then you know they're both supported by the PC. However, you may have a burnt-out slot. That's not fun because you will need a new motherboard to fix that problem.

it could be the possbile
1. fault ram chip best way to test this is just have 1 in and check the memory reading
2. what version of windows do u have since if u have below xp it will not detect the 1gb
3. faulty ram socket on the laptop, this would need to be fixed by a dell tech or laptop tech.
hope this helps.

Test to see if one of the memory modules is defective. Place them in one at a time and see if they are detected. If they are then the problem may lie with one of your memory slots. if the latter is the case then your system board will need to be replaced.
